FRANKFORT — Janet Lee Smeltzer, 74, of Frankfort, died June 17, 2013, in Traverse City.
Born in L’Anse on April 23, 1939, she was the daughter of the Thomas and Mildred Cook. Janet married Joseph W. Smeltzer on Sept. 12, 1959.
Janet pursued many interests in her lifetime. In 1978 Janet was the first hospice volunteer in Benzie County. She was very involved in Blaine Christian Church, where she directed the choir for both adults and children for 16 years and lead various Bible studies. She also took time to visit homebound friends and enjoy lunch together.
She was an avid gardener. Janet was the greatest at spoiling her grandchildren on their birthdays.
Janet was a member of Eastern Star and cofounded Understanding Substance Abuse (USA) with Doris Marshall.
Janet was a devoted servant to her family, friends, church and community.
She is survived by husband, Joseph Smeltzer; three children, Michelle Smeltzer and her children, Evan Smeltzer and Brielan Andersen; Martin Smeltzer, his wife, Mary and their children, Joseph, Thomas, Emily, Ellen and Mary Claire; and Anita Owen and husband, Patrick Owen; and siblings, Daryl Cook, Lyle Cook, James Cook, Blanche Clark and Carol Ehman.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Bernard Cook and Ray Cook; and sister, Isabelle Mendenhall.
Visitation will be today, June 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Jowett Family Funeral Home, Benzonia. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. June 22, 2013, at Blaine Christian Church, with the Rev. Robert Larimer officiating. Burial in Joyfield Twp. Cemetery.
