TRAVERSE CITY — Emma LaVerne Hansen Young, 102, passed away April 4, 2014, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Emma was born on July 8, 1911, in Manistee County, to the late Albert Marcus and Ida Gertrude Ruth (Scott) Hansen.
She graduated from Lansing High School, where she was editor of her school newspaper in 1929 and Michigan State College in 1934 with a degree in home economics.
She worked for Consumers Power in Saginaw until her marriage on May 31, 1941, to John Evert Young. Later she substituted at SHS and AHHS. Emma and Evert retired to Loon Lake in Oscoda County. Later she moved to Mio before settling in Traverse City.
Emma was an active member of her church in Saginaw and a member of the Saginaw AAUW.
She wrote a column for the Rose City newspaper, was on the zoning board of Oscoda County and belonged to bridge clubs in Saginaw and Mio. Emma also worked on election boards and belonged to Lady Lioness.
Emma is survived by her son, John A. Young and his wife, Penny, of Traverse City; daughter, Betsy and her husband, Terry O’Toole, of Sun City West, Ariz.; granddaughters, Amy and her husband, Tom Carlson and Julie and her husband, Joe Kemble; and great-grandchildren Ashley, Allison, Torrin, J.P. and Tyler. Also surviving are sister, Barbara Podesta, of Vancouver, Wash.; and brother, Neil Hansen, of Lansing.
Emma was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, John Evert Young in 1976; parents; sister, Kay Fonda; and brother, Howard Hansen.
The family will celebrate her life in the spring and will lay her to rest at the Young Family Plot in Kittle Cemetery in Oscoda.
