---- — CEDAR PARK, Texas — Lillian Gene Brown, 82, of Traverse City, passed away on Oct. 8, 2013, in Cedar Park, Texas. Lillian was born in Irvine, Ky., on Oct. 24, 1930, to Dora Lee and Eugene Ackerman. She spent her early childhood in Mississippi and Wisconsin. After moving to Michigan, Lillian graduated from Northwestern High School in Detroit.

Lillian left Detroit to attend college at Colorado Women’s College in Denver in 1948. There in 1951, she met her future husband, Kenneth, on a blind date. They were later married on June 16, 1951. The family returned to Detroit in June of 1952, where their son Michael was born.

After the birth of their son, Lillian returned to college at Wayne State University in Detroit, where she earned a degree in education. After graduation, she began teaching in Garden City, Mich. Lillian and the family moved to Battle Creek, Mich. in 1963, due to her husband’s job. There she taught second grade in the Lakeview school system at Mingus Brook elementary.

Lillian continued her education, obtaining her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Western Michigan University. After earning her degree, she transferred from teaching to begin her career at Willard Library in Battle Creek. Lillian and her husband moved to Northport in 1986. She worked as an elementary school librarian in Suttons Bay until her retirement in 1995. Lillian enjoyed her retirement years in Northport, Aiken, S.C., and Surprise, Ariz. Summers were spent in Traverse City, where she and Ken relocated full time in 2012.

Lillian in survived by Kenneth, her husband of 62 years; son, Michael and his wife Katie of Austin, Texas; grandson, Joshua his wife Jessica of London, England, and great-granddaughters, Caroline and Juliet; and Lillian’s sister, Helen Sica and her husband Nicolas of Suttons Bay.

A memorial service will be held in the future in Northport. Any memorial donations should be made to a charity of your choice.
