---- — GRAND RAPIDS — Kenneth Hiram Muir, aged 92, passed peacefully on Sept. 28, 2013. Ken was the son of Boyce K. Muir and Ellen Owen Muir, and grew up in East Grand Rapids.

Ken was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and boating with friends and family.

For all of his life Ken traveled widely both within the U.S. and abroad, often accompanied by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Scarlett Muir. Ken also had many adventures with his son, William Boyce Muir.

Throughout his life Ken loved spending time with extended family including many Muir and Scarlett cousins and was the beloved Uncle Ken to many nieces, nephews and friends.

After spending several years at The Todd School for Boys in Woodstock, Ill., Ken returned to graduate from East Grand Rapids High School with the class of 1939. Ken began his college career at Kenyan College then transferred to Allegany College, graduating in 1942. While in college Ken played football and was the president of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.

Ken was a decorated veteran of World War II, serving overseas with the U.S. Army for five years. While in uniform Ken served under General Patton for two years. Ken received the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Ribbon, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.

After proudly serving his country Sergeant Muir returned to Grand Rapids and started a career in business under his father, Boyce K. Muir, founder of the Muir Drug Stores chain. Ken was named after his uncle, Kenneth Davidson Muir, whom he succeeded as president of Muir Photo Co. (Kenart Photo Co.). While working in the family business covering Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, Ken served as vice president of Muir Drug Co., Laraine Land Building Co. and Dewey Products Co.

Ken was a member of Grand Rapids Elks Lodge, Kent Country Club, Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, American Legion Post #305 and a charter member of Mayflower Congregational Church.

Kenneth H. Muir is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Scarlett Muir; son, William Boyce Muir (Robin Rosier), of Traverse City; brothers, John Owen Muir (Jan) and Robert Boyce Muir; special nephew, James Richard Scarlett (Bonnie) and their children, James Evan (Amanda), Mark Robert, Ryan Michael, Kelli Lynn and the newest Scarlett, James Tucker; niece, Sheryl Lynn Schaap (Jeff), sons, Joshua and Justin Schaap; and nieces, Nancy Muir Dugan and Mary Leigh Muir Metz. Ken is also survived by many beloved cousins and family friends.

Along with parents, Boyce and Ellen Muir, Ken was preceded in death by his brother, Bruce Muir; and nephew, Scott Muir.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Mayflower Congregational Church, 2345 Robinson Road SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506. Private interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Memorials may be considered to the American Heart Association, Mayflower Congregational Church (Music Department) or The National Psoriasis Foundation.
