KINGSLEY — Eugene Lawton Hoxie, 87, passed from this life Friday, Sept. 20, 2013. Gene was born May 10, 1926, in Traverse City, to Douglas and Isla Hoxie.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946.
On June 16, 1950, Gene married Katherine L. Riley in Traverse City.
Carrying on his legacy are his wife, Katherine; son, Mel (Shirley) Hoxie and grandson, Andrew; son, Douglas (Debbie) Hoxie and granddaughter, Amy; daughter, Shirley (Larry) Morgan and grandchildren, Justin (Kari) Morgan, Sarah (Jim) Morgan Douglas, Brandon (Jacqueline) Morgan, Kevan (Madeleine) Morgan, Patrick (Lindsey) Morgan and Emily K. (Travis) Waddell; daughter, Debra (Kirk) Steffens and grandchildren, Adam (Theresa) Steffens, Kyle Steffens (Samantha Drow) and Abigail Steffens; and treasured great-grandchildren, Sam Waddell, Jacob and Roman Douglas, and Zachary and Alexander Miller-Morgan. Gene also leaves “sister” Elsie Larcom; sister-in-law and special friend, Lucille Lewis and Frank Maxwell; and sisters-in-law, Janet (Francis, deceased) Hoxie and Donna (Dan) Zenner; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Gene was predeceased by his five siblings.
Eugene so enjoyed his family, going to the casino with Katherine, farming, fishing, building, woodworking, traveling and spending time at his son-in-law and daughter’s house in Arizona. He and his wife visited several states with his Navy buddies for their annual reunions. His many adventures included a hot air balloon ride at the age of 80; celebrating his 60th wedding anniversary on a raft ride on the Colorado River with his wife, daughter and son-in-law; and a trip in August this year on the Nauticat on Grand Traverse Bay where he had spent many years fishing.
He was a member of the Traverse City Eagles Club 383.
Gene spent his last day of life here with his “buddy,” his beloved son, Mel, building furniture for Christmas gifts for his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
