Traverse City Record-Eagle

---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Lynwood “Lyn” Eugene Roth, 78, of Traverse City, passed away Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, while at home under hospice care. Lyn was born on March 18, 1935, in Tuscola, the son of Christian and Florence (Briggs) Roth.

He graduated from Caro High School in 1953.

On Dec. 31, 1954, Lyn was wed to Nancy Frick at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro.

In high school he started as a clerk at Riley’s Shoe Store in Caro, and he worked there for 12 years. In 1963 he became an agent with State Farm Insurance.

He started in Houghton Lake, Grayling area and relocated at the end of 1964 to Traverse City. With the help of his wife, Nancy, they established a successful insurance agency and after 32 years retired in 1995.

He loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing and hunting with relatives and friends.

He was a member and past president of the Life Underwriters Association and member of the Twin Bay Exchange Club.

Lyn was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Caro in 1942 and confirmed in 1949.

He had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1965, where he was both an Elder and long-standing usher. He was active with the Couples Club and Prime Timers church groups.

Since their retirement he and Nancy spent their winters in Avon Park, Fla. Lyn was active in the retirement community where they lived.

Lyn is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy; children, Randy, of Sebring, Fla., Timothy (Karen), of Petoskey, Sherry, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jill (Carl) Case, of Traverse City; grandchildren, Tyler Roth, Megan Roth, Michael Roth, Candi Case, Kristy Bremmer and Kevin Aeschliman; great-grandchildren, William Walton-Case and Kaleigh Bremmer; brother, Donnie (Donna) Roth; sisters, Shirley (Paul) Laethem and Charlotte Hills; in-laws, Elaine Dwyer, Clarence Frick and Wayne (Gerry) Frick; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Lyn will be remembered for his practical jokes, and most people have a fond memory of how he got them.

For those of us who were around him a lot, you knew to look for the slight quiver of his lip that let you know he might be trying to pull a “fast one.”

Visitation for Lyn will be held on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with a visitation one hour prior. Pastor Robert Zagore will serve as celebrant. Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be sent to Munson Hospice, Trinity Lutheran Church or to the Grand Traverse Commission on Aging, which held a special place in his heart because of the work his daughter does with the program.
