Traverse City Record-Eagle
---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Margery Noreen McGhan, 88, a longtime resident of Traverse City, died Monday evening, April 1, 2013, at her home, comforted by her loving family.
Born March 20, 1925, in Charlevoix, she was the daughter of the late William and Ruth (Whitney) Hair. On September 21, 1946, in Charlevoix she married Marion J. “Bub” McGhan, who preceded her in death in 1997.
Margery will be remembered for her many interests and leisure pursuits, such as reading her favorite novel on her back deck, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, knitting, playing golf, square dancing, world travel and the Detroit Tigers. How ironic that she would die on opening day for the Tigers. Family get togethers were always very special for Marge. She will be truly missed by many.
She was a kind and committed mother to her five children, Nancy (Ken McGowan) McGhan, of Fife Lake, Bruce McGhan, of Traverse City, Sue (Jon) Wyckoff, of Traverse City, Mark (Natalie) McGhan, of Traverse City, and Roger (Patty) McGhan, of Cadillac; 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren plus two on the way; siblings, Marilyn (Dave) Miller, of Charlevoix, Bill (Clarice) Hair, of Byron Center, and Nancy “Lynn” (Cal) Lamoreaux, of Charlevoix; and brother-in-law, Rex McGhan, of Hazel Park; along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary L. McGhan; and a sister, Marvel Maison.
The McGhan family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, April 8, 2013 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, at the funeral home. The Rev. Devon Herrell will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Burial will follow at Brookside Cemetery in Charlevoix at a later date.
For those planning an expression of sympathy, Marge has requested donations to Meals on Wheels or the Humane Society of Missaukee County. Envelopes may be obtained at the funeral home.
