SUTTONS BAY — Albert “Bert” Edward Nelson, 82, of Suttons Bay, died Monday, April 1, 2013, at Tendercare of Suttons Bay. He was born on Oct. 2, 1930, in Suttons Bay, the son of Julius and Hilma (Larson) Nelson.
Bert was a lifelong resident of Suttons Bay, where he graduated from Suttons Bay High School.
After high school he joined the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War. He received several medals during his service.
Bert started his sailing career on the USS Badger in Ludington. He made Captain sailing the Ranger III from Houghton Hancock to Isle Royal and also worked on tug boats throughout the Great Lakes.
He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay, a member of the American Legion Post #35 and the Cherryland VFW Post #2780.
Bert is survived by his children, Geno Nelson, of Pentwater, and Tim Nelson, of Irvine, Calif.; grandchildren, Tim, Nicole and Trisha; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Melvin (Jean) Nelson and Julius “Bio” Nelson, both of Suttons Bay, Phyllis Richard, of Northport, and Annette Trotter, of Traverse City; and his longtime companion, Bernice.
Cremation has taken place. A visitation for the community begins at 10 a.m., with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m., on Friday, April 5, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Suttons Bay. All are invited to a reception following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Suttons Bay Friendship Center.
