ENGLEWOOD, Fla. — Robert Carl Herkner, 78, of Englewood, Fla., died at his home on March 20, 2014. Robert was born in Traverse City on May 29, 1935, to Herbert and Thelma (Kibby) Herkner.
Robert was a well known and respected businessman in the community. He and his wife successfully owned and operated The Pantry Shelf, a convenience store in Grawn, for 35 years before retiring to Englewood, Fla., in 2004.
Robert was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the American Legion Post, the VFW and the Elks Lodge, all of Rotunda West, Fla.
He also was an avid golfer and fisherman.
Robert was married in California in 1960 to his wife of 53 years, Barbara Herkner, who survives, along with his three sons, Dale (Tracie) Herkner, of Lake Ann, Steve (Trinia) Herkner, of Thompsonville, and Craig Herkner, of Thompsonville. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Bryce, Cole, Taylor and Morgan.
A celebration of life will be held this summer.
