TRAVERSE CITY — Leon M. Harig, age 86, of Traverse City, passed away at home Sunday, March 23, 2014. He was born April 20, 1927, in Traverse City, to Ben and Margretta (Broomhead) Harig.
Leon graduated from Traverse City Central High School in 1946 and enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he helped to process out soldiers after the war.
On Feb. 10, 1951, Leon married Maretta Fouch in Traverse City. Together they raised two daughters.
Leon worked for Cone Drive for over 40 years.
After retirement he and Maretta enjoyed many winters in Marco Island, Fla.
Leon enjoyed hunting and fishing his whole life. Most recently he enjoyed hunting on Drummond Island at Camp Dingle Hopper and fishing on the island at Perch Camp. He played golf on the Cone Drive Golf Team where he won many trophies. He continued to golf during his retirement years.
He dearly loved his family and enjoyed every moment he had with them. He will be greatly missed.
Leon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maretta; two daughters, Linda (James) Borowicz, of Traverse City, and Cynthia (Kevin) McCormick, also of Traverse City; four grandchildren, Hilary (Daniel) Quagliana, Jessica Borowicz, Melissa (Ben) Eman and Corey Moura; two great-grandsons, Andrew Lea and Thomas James Quagliana; a sister, DeVella (Jake) Colwell; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Leon was preceded in death by a brother, Gaylord Harig; and two sisters, Ann McMahon and Doris Fritz.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Ogdensburg United Methodist Church, at 1 p.m.
