FRANKFORT — Virginia Dawn Ferris (Gonyon) Young, of Frankfort, 92, died March 14, 2014, at Paul Oliver Long Term Care. She was born at home in Elberta on July 13, 1921, the daughter of James Herbert and Daisy (Thackwell) Ferris.
She was a member of the last graduating class of Benzonia High School. Living through the great depression and baking breads almost daily on a wood cook stove, she would can anything she could get her hands on. Even though money was scarce for food she always had a supply on hand and was able to create delicious meals for family and friends. Being a great homemaker she loved to cook, bake breads, donuts, cream puffs, homemade jams, jellies and noodles.
Virginia was a seamstress making dresses for her girls when they were younger. She always made her children breakfast before sending them off to school
Virginia never obtained a driver license, riding her bike when necessary she worked various jobs working in the kitchen of the old Hotel Frankfort and Jolly Kids Togs a garment factory. She was an avid reader.
She is survived by sons Kenneth Gonyon of Three Rivers, Gary (Trish) Gonyon of Benzonia, and Charles (Carol) Gonyon Elkhart, Ind; daughters Sandra (Dan) Gill of Frankfort and Jeanie Knudsen of Elberta; many grandchildren, great and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Gary Thackwell, Joyce Haefle, Sharon (Doyle) Bond all of Ga., Daisy Butler of Interlochen, James Fredrickson of Minn. and Charles Fredrickson of Va.
She was preceded in death her first husband Kenneth C. Gonyon and her second husband Leonard Young; daughter Belinda Fraly; sister Lucy Fredrickson; brother Rev. Charles Thackwell and mother Daisy Thackwell.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 5, at the Jowett Family Funeral Homes in Benzonia, with Pastor Mendoza officiating. Burial in Gilmore Township Cemetery.
