INTERLOCHEN — Bernice Virginia Rice, 93, of Interlochen, formerly of Rochester, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014, at the Homesteader in Benzonia. She was born Oct. 12, 1920, in Detroit, the daughter of Herman and Lydia (Thiel) Kowalske.
Bernice was a devoted Christian and attended the Bear Lake United Methodist Church and the Grawn United Methodist Church. She had also been a member of the Abiding Presence Lutheran Church of Rochester and the First Congregational Church of Rochester.
When she was younger Bernice played softball and was proud to have turned a triple play unassisted. She also was competitive in roller-skate dancing. Bernice enjoyed going fishing, bowling, playing golf, cards and Dominoes. She also enjoyed carving wooden ducks and birds.
Bernice was a member of the Rochester Garden Club and loved tending to her flower gardens.
She was known to enjoy a good turtle sundae or two.
Bernice is survived by her children, Linda Bramble, of Honor, Thomas (Molly) Rice, of Rochester, and John Rice, of Ypsilanti; her daughter-in-law, Cheryl Rice Phipps, of Battle Creek; four grandchildren, Samuel Rice, Amanda (Shane) Karns, Carolyn (Jeff) Fitzgibbon and Cynthia (Ryan) Ellingsen; four great-grandchildren, Brie Karns, Leia Karns, Haley Fitzgibbon and Hope Fitzgibbon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Rice in 1998; her son, David Rice; her grandson, Scotty Bramble in 1983; her brother, Elmer; and her sisters, Evelyn, Agnes and Gertrude.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, with the Rev. Dr. Bobby Cabot officiating. Interment will be in the Van Hoosen Jones Stoney Creek Cemetery in Rochester Hills. Visitation will be held Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
