TRAVERSE CITY — Elizabeth “Betty” Marian May, age 90, of Traverse City, formerly of Lovells, Mich., passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 12, 2014. She was born July 12, 1923, in Detroit to Paul Gormley and Ida (McIntyre) McIlvane.
Betty graduated from Holy Redeemer High School in Detroit and attended Madonna College. She married the late Edward John May on Aug. 10, 1946. Together they raised three children in Detroit. They lived for many years on K.P. Lake near Grayling until Edward’s death in 2008. Betty then moved to Traverse City to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling, collecting antiques, and playing Bridge and Poker. She was also a sports enthusiast, especially football and hockey. She was well-loved for her great sense of humor and her kind and generous spirit.
Her family was very important to her and she loved spending time with them. She was proud of her three children, six granchildren, and her great-granddaughter.
She is survived by her daughters, Cathleen (Charles) Heiler of Traverse City and Suzanne (Steven) Thorne of St. Charles, Ill.; her son, Paul (Kris Hurlin) May of Glen Arbor; six grandchildren, Amanda (Michael) Tessmer, Sarah Heiler, Jamison Thorne, Amelia Thorne, Liana May, and Keenan May; and one great-granddaughter, Stella Elizabeth Tessmer. She is also survived by her brother, Robert (Marlene) McIlvane of Royal Oak, Mich.; plus a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and siblings, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. May. A private family service will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions in Elizabeth’s memory may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation or the Grand Traverse Commission on Aging.
