PALMER, Alaska — Thomas E. Sommerville, 67, of Palmer, Alaska, died Jan. 14, 2014 at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer.
He was born Sept. 5, 1947, in Traverse City, to Martin and Gyneth (Morey) Sommerville.
After graduation from Central High School, Tom joined the U.S. Marine Corp where he served from 1967-1969. After boot camp, he spent his tour in-country in Vietnam.
After returning from Vietnam, Tom spent a number of years in Colorado where he worked in construction and as a cook in a variety of restaurants. He eventually moved to Alaska where he lived for the past 35 years. While there he continued in construction and the restaurant business. He was also involved in a variety of Veteran organizations and worked as a volunteer counselor at the Vietnam Veterans Resource Center in Wasilla, Alaska. While in Alaska he met Christine Campbell-Graham who would be his long time companion until her death in 2007.
He is survived by his brother Bob (Susan) Sommerville; nieces, Cymbre (Sam) Foster, Cymantha (John) Kostecki, and Heather (Mike) Perkette; and several great-nieces and nephews, all of Traverse City.
He was preceded in death by Christine Campbell-Graham, parents, brother John Sommerville, and nephew Matthew Sommerville.
Services with military honors were held in Palmer. The family here will remember Tom privately. Cremation has taken place. His ashes and Christine’s will be spread together on Anchorage Bay.
