FIFE LAKE — Robert James Elliott, age 79, of Fife Lake, formerly of Manton, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 1, 2014, at his home with his daughters by his side. He was born in Grand Rapids on Aug. 20, 1934, to James and Agatha (Byers) Elliott.
Robert married Karen Jane Batt on June 3, 1961, in Manton. They were married for 51 years.
Robert served our country in the U.S. Army.
He was an inspector for the State of Michigan Highway Department for 30-plus years.
He loved playing golf with his friends and was proud of his hole-in-one shot. He loved to garden, was a proficient carpenter and built the home his family grew up in. He enjoyed bowling and was on a league in Manton for many years, where he bowled a perfect game.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Lauri (Rick) Ryan, of Williamsburg; daughter, Lisa Elliott Lautner, of Traverse City; son, Eric Elliott, of Fife Lake; grandson, Brandon Wiersma; granddaughter, Jessica Wiersma; grandson, Tyler Lautner; grandson, Michael Davis; sisters, Louise Bouwma, of Grand Rapids, and Beverly (Dee) Emmons, of Cadillac; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Karen Elliott; father, James Martin Elliott; mother, Agatha (Byers) Elliott; in-laws, Emil and Mildred Batt; brothers-in-law, Donny Batt, Grover Dontjie, Keith Dalquist and Lester Bouwma; sisters-in-law, Vera Dalquist and Virginia Dontjie; and nephew, Kirk Dontjie.
There will be a graveside service in the spring at the Fairview Cemetery, Manton.
