TRAVERSE CITY — Eugene M. Briggs, age 83, of Traverse City, passed away Jan. 1, 2014. He was born Nov. 28, 1930, in Lansing, son of the late Mulfred and Jessie Briggs.
Gene graduated from Sexton High School and went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army.
He retired after 42 years from the U.S. Postal Service; he delivered the mail in the Lansing area.
He enjoyed many activities, including cross-country skiing, hiking the North Country Trail, biking the rail trails, Big Band music and going to concerts. Mr. and Mrs. Briggs traveled the United States together. Gene was a pie connoisseur and just couldn’t pass up a good slice of pie.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Frances (Austin) Briggs; children, Barbara (Kim) Seymour, Donald (Kerry Kendall) Briggs, Kathy (Tim) Jones, Jody Goodwin, Randy (Robin Story) Briggs, Patty Stowe and Mary (Jim) Couling; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Roberta Dugan and Vernagene Brandell; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Raymond Brandell.
A memorial service will be held on June 15, 2014. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Lansing.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy or The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City.
