ELK RAPIDS — Floyd J. “Buss” Merillat passed from this life on June 6, 2013, at his home of 60 years in Elk Rapids.
Born on the family farm in South Milton Township on April 18, 1925, he was the son of Ada (Saunders) and Floyd Merillat. On April 15, 1950, he was married to Marcia Westlund at the United Methodist Church in Elk Rapids.
He was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids for over 50 years.
Buss was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of AMVET Post 114.
He was a member of Elk Rapids Masonic Lodge, where he was a 33 degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite. He was a Past Master and was also Mason of the Year.
After retiring from the U.S. Post Office in 1972 he embarked on a career in real estate with Strickland Realty in Elk Rapids with his brother, Stewart.
Buss was an avid golfer and longtime member of Elk Rapids Golf Club, scoring a hole-in-one in May of 1991.
Buss’ greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marcia; his daughter, Linda and son-in-law, John Pillsbury, of Kewadin; son, Bill Merillat, of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; grandsons, Matthew Pillsbury, of Waterford, and Kevin Pillsbury, of Big Sky, Mont.; brothers, Carl (Dorothy) Merillat, of Elk Rapids, and Stewart (Carol) Merillat, of Elk Rapids; sister, Vivian (Frank) Walewski, of Horton; sister-in-law, Elzora Merillat, of Rapid City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at 2 p.m., at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 403 Traverse Street, Elk Rapids. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
