FIFE LAKE — George David Smith, 90, of Fife Lake, passed away Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at home. He was born on July 17, 1923, in Standish, to the late Karl and Mabel (Mangus) Smith.
He worked for many years operating heavy equipment and doing road construction, as well as farming.
George loved the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and bird watching.
He married Zelda (Newell) Gray on Feb. 14, 1983, and they enjoyed over 30 years together. They both loved to go camping and traveled extensively for about 15 years after his retirement, hosting at state forest campgrounds where they made many friends and had a great adventure. George also enjoyed his outings to the Fife Lake hardware store and his many friends there.
George is survived by his wife, Zelda; children, Lee Smith and Ruth Ann (Smith) Hadden; stepchildren, Tom (Julie) Gray and Reatha (Max) Gray Cochran; grandchildren, Sandy, Reye, Jodi, Kristen and Tawni; six great-grandchildren; special cousin, Tom Brooks; special friends, Karen and Larry Redman; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters; and his previous wife of 37 years, Geraldine Martin.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, at Kalkaska Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m., with Linda Bridson officiating. Burial will be in Wamboldt Cemetery in Remus in the spring.
