TRAVERSE CITY — Mancell Edward Hein, 92, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. The Lord needed one more firefighter, and Mancell answered the last alarm of his life.
He was born on Jan. 1, 1922, in Detroit, the son of Edward “Ted” and Muriel (Jackson) Hein.
Mancell was a PFC in the Army during World War II, where he received numerous medals, including the Purple Heart. He served in the Philippines and New Guinea.
Mancell was a retired Lieutenant with the Detroit Fire Department, retiring from Engine #58 after 27 years.
He enjoyed fishing, cooking and woodworking. He loved being a father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Mancell is survived by his children, Alyce Hein, Susan (Nels) Olson and David (Sandra) Hein, all of Traverse City; grandchildren, Nicole and Jackie Hein and Kimberly and Mary Shortreed; great-grandson, Lucas Edward Shortreed; and sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Tony Trupiano, of St. Clair.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen Minnie (Kunath) Hein, who died, July 9, 2002; and special friend, Joan Duff.
The family will greet friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at Life Story Funeral Home, Traverse City. A brief military service will be held at 11 a.m.
