ONEKAMA — Dennis E. McCarthy, 94, of Onekama, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. He was born Oct. 3, 1918, in Chief, the son of Maurice and Sadie (Potter) McCarthy.
Dennis served in World War II in the U.S. Army. After being honorably discharged in 1945, Dennis returned to the family business, Blarney Castle Oil Company, in Bear Lake, where he proceeded to purchase sole interest in the company from his brothers. A hardworking, honest and dedicated businessman, he continued to build the business on service, hard work and a commitment to the principles on which the company was founded. After almost 80 years at Blarney Castle, his values and commitments to his customers and his appreciation of his employees did not change.
Dennis enjoyed serving the community and was active on many boards of directors, associations and clubs, including the Security National Bank Board of Directors, West Shore Medical Center Board of Directors, the Michigan Petroleum Association and the Bear Lake Lions Club.
Dennis is survived by: his sons, Dennis B. (Beth) McCarthy of Onekama, and William J. (Laura) McCarthy of Beulah; five grandchildren, Dennis P. (Megan) McCarthy of Onekama, Brian McCarthy of Onekama, Will McCarthy of Beulah, Meghan McCarthy of Beulah, and Logan Veurink of Beulah; four great-granddaughters, Colleen, Mairin, Elisabeth and Delaney McCarthy; his sister, Kathryn Keillor of Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Dennis was preceded in death by: his wife, Helen Dunham McCarthy in 2007; and his brothers, Darryl McCarthy and Floyd McCarthy.
Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Onekama, with Father Timothy B. Brown SJ, celebrant, and Father James Doherty and Father Larry Sergott, concelebrants. Interment will be in the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Manistee. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva.
