John Calhoun Sterritt IV

FLETCHER, N.C. — John Calhoun Sterritt IV, 43, of Fletcher, N.C., passed away on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014. John was born in Chicago, Ill., a native of Traverse City, and was the son of John Calhoun Sterritt III of Asheville, N.C., and the late Barbara Aussem.

John moved to Asheville in 1996 after graduating from Western Michigan University with a degree in journalism.

He went to work for the Hendersonville Times Newspaper as a sports writer and then decided to attend The Mercer University of Law as a result of his respect for his grandfather, John C. Sterritt II, who was a patent attorney in Michigan.

After graduating from law school and passing the North Carolina State Bar John began his law practice in Asheville. John loved living and working in Asheville and was greatly respected for his integrity, professionalism and compassion as an attorney. John was a member of several law organizations in Asheville and North Carolina.

John is survived by a loving family; a son, Cal and Cal’s mother, Sara Findley, and soon to be born son in May; and his mother, Olga Kovalsky. In addition, he is survived by his father, John; stepmother, Andrea; a sister he adored, Allison Sterritt, of Portland, Ore.; a stepbrother, Sean (Crystal) Flory; and many loving friends and relatives.

A private memorial service in Asheville will be held for John at Lewis Memorial Park. A celebration of life will be held this summer in Traverse City.

Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting his family.
