TRAVERSE CITY — Gene “Smokey” Rokos, 66, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at Munson Hospice House. Gene was born on Nov. 18, 1947, in Traverse City, the son of Howard and Allene (Stricker) Rokos.
He graduated from Traverse City Central in 1966 and joined the United States Air Force.
Gene married Gail Judd on Aug. 15, 1986, and recently retired after a 32-year career with Easling Construction, most recently installing ceramic tile.
Although he was quite the prankster, Gene was a kind and gentle man who enjoyed watching Red Wings hockey and going to the casino with his wife. He loved fishing and hunting, especially going to deer camp.
Gene is survived by his wife, Gail; son, Scott Rokos; stepsons, Randy Hirt and Michael (Jill) Hirt; grandson, Hank Aaron Hirt; brothers, Don (Darlene) Rokos and John (Mary) Rokos; and his four-legged companion, Holly.
Preceding Gene in death were his parents, Howard and Allene Rokos; sister, Mary Lou Kirkey; and several aunts and uncles.
Gene’s memorial service will be held on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at 11 a.m., at Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. There will be visitation on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m., also at the funeral home.
