NAPLES, Fla. — Maxine Irene Bridgman Summerfield, 88, who spent her golden years in Naples, Fla., regrettably passed away on Feb. 4, 2014.
“Mibs” was born in Flint in 1925 and graduated from Short Ridge High School in Indianapolis. She received a degree in music from Wells College.
She married Arthur E. Summerfield on Nov. 22, 1947. Together they raised two sons and a daughter.
She participated in many civic activities, including founding the Flint Institute of Music and heading a puppeteering troop that traveled and performed in the Flint public schools. Mibs and her husband, Bud, also helped found the William Byrd International Music Competition in correlation with the Flint Institute of Music. She was a dedicated board member of the Flint Symphony Orchestra.
Mibs was a member of both St. Cecelia and the Junior League.
Her passion for the piano and for gardening, as well as her love for her family, will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur; her children, Arthur and Julie; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Charles.
A memorial service was held in Naples on Saturday Feb. 8, 2014.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Flint Institute of Music.
