FRANKFORT — Fern M. Kittleson of Frankfort, 83, passed from this life to eternity Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. She was the fourth of six children born to C. Leland and Flossie Plant on Aug. 30, 1930, in Flint, Mich.
Fern moved with her family to Elberta when she was 9 years old. She graduated from Elberta High School Class of ‘48. She went on to complete County Normal School. On June 12, 1948, Fern married Leonard Kittleson and resided in the area all of her life. She worked various jobs including The Snack Shack, Jolly Kids Togs, Richard Place, A & W, Gambles, and cleaning homes in the area and around Crystal Lake with her sister Yvonne Paris.
Fern was a humorous, generous and feisty lady with a strong faith in God. She loved a clean home, new hair styles, a good book, her pets, daily Bible devotions and family history research. But most of all she deeply loved her family. She had a special loving relationship with her granddaughter Kristi, and cherished babysitting for grandson Dan when he was a child.
She loved the wonderful times she had with nephews Kurt and Jeff when they lived with her. Fern especially loved watching great-grandchildren Hailey and Michael grow and enjoyed a very close relationship with Brenden and Allyson.
Fern found great comfort attending church each Saturday night with her special friends and attending birthday club. Also she had a special love for her grand-dogs Fala, Jolly and Bella. She also enjoyed shopping trips to Traverse City and her beautiful flower garden. Fern enjoyed RV camping trips with in-laws, Edvena and John House to Canada. Also her trips to Niagara Falls, North Dakota, Florida and Texas. Her favorite times were visiting her sister Sharon (Tom) Curl, Jim (Kristi) Andrew and Zak in the Flint area.
Fern liked quiz shows, concerts, “oldies” music, feeding her birds and squirrels, a good cheeseburger and quizzing family members about forgotten song titles or movie stars. She was a die-hard L.A. Lakers fan, from Kareem to Kobe, and wagered one dollar bets in the NBA finals. She was able to see them play in an arena in Houston with her son Dennis and Claudia.
In recent years she fought many health issues with strength and dignity. Her close friend and daughter-in-law Mary became her caregiver until she and Len went to live at the Maples. She received loving care and enjoyed her time there by making many friends old and new. Fern for many years volunteered calling Bingo for the residents at the Maples.
A thank-you to hospice, especially for Pastor Mike praying with us. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard; children, Larry (Mary), and Dennis (Claudia) Kittleson; grandchildren, Kristi and Daniel (Torey) Kittleson; great-grandchildren, Hailey and Michael Kittleson; sister, Sharon (Tom) Curl; brother, William (Blanche) Plant; and sister-in-law, Fern Plant.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at St Ann Catholic Church with Fr. John Porter officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
