PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. — Mary Joy Thirlby, 59, of Pawleys Island, S.C., died peacefully at home Thursday, April 25, 2013, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Traverse City on Dec. 19, 1953, she was the daughter of Charlsie and Ben Thirlby, who preceded her in death.
Mary Joy attended Southlake High School in St. Clair Shores.
In 1999 she moved to Pawleys Island, S.C., with her sister and brother-in-law, Charlsie Kay and Paul Coderre. As with everything else she did, she leapt into life in South Carolina with both feet.
She was a “smile manager” at the Piggly Wiggly in Pawleys Island and, in addition to her other pursuits, enjoyed kayaking with friends and especially walking the beach with her beloved Mr. Lincoln and Ready. Mary Joy truly brightened the day of anyone with whom she came in contact. She had a heart of gold, a strong sense of faith and an air of indefatigability.
She is survived by her sweetheart, Gene Hamilton; her sister, Kay (Paul) Coderre; her brothers, Robert (Bev) Schwenter, Charles Thirlby and Thomas Thirlby; beloved nieces and nephews, Kathy (Jim) Stewart, Shelley (Tom) Belanger, Nancy (Greg) Laubach, Amy (Dan) Faber, Scott Schwenter, Ben Thirlby and Benjamin (Jessica) Thirlby; and by her beloved great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place on Monday, April 29, at the Burroughs Funeral Home of Murrells Inlet, S.C., from 5 to 7 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Litchfield.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to S.C.U.T.E. (South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts) at www.deboideuscute.org or St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Pawleys Island, S.C.
