Bernard Dewey Thorington

KALKASKA — Bernard Thorington, beloved brother and uncle, was called home to be with the Lord on June 29, 2013, from Tendercare Health Center of Leelanau.

Bernie was born to Dewey and Pearl Thorington at home in Kalkaska on July 14, 1933.

He is survived by his sister, Betty (Jerold) Foehl of Traverse City; and his four nieces, Tracey (Ronald) Colling of Thompson Station, Tenn., Meghan (Tyler) Heel of Gilbert, Ariz., Areta (Joshua) Haigh of Kalkaska, and Meredith Foehl of Los Angeles.

Uncle Bernie also is survived by his three grand-nieces and three grand-nephews, Spencer, Dawson, Mackenzie, Raegan and Garrett Colling, and Madeline Heel.

After graduating from Kalkaska Rural Agricultural High School in 1952, Bernie served as a cook in the U.S. Army’s 4th Armored Division from 1954 to 1956, during the Korean Conflict. He later retired as a machinist working for Gardner-Denver Corporation, and Eagle-Ottawa Leather Tannery.

The family would like to thank all the staff of Tendercare for taking such excellent care of Bernie. They made his last three and a half years a quality time and his passing peaceful.

A private memorial service is planned. Burial at Coldsprings Township Cemetery was arranged through Wolfe-O’Neill Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
