KALKASKA — Helen Marie Uithol, 92, of Kalkaska, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012. She was born in Cadillac on July 4, 1920, the daughter of James and Leona V. (Walker) Davis.
Helen graduated from Cadillac High School, County Normal and earned her B.A. and M.A. from Wayne State University.
On June 19, 1940, she married Gilbert Uithol Jr.
Mrs. Uithol taught country school in Manton, Westbrook and Gentle for six years before continuing her teaching career in the Madison School District in Madison Heights in 1954. She taught school for 37½ years, 21 of those years teaching special education for the mentally handicapped.
Helen was active in the Missionary Circle Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hazel Park.
She loved music and reading. She was a gifted pianist, a gift she shared generously throughout her life.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in St. Johns and the St. Johns Senior Center until moving to Kalkaska in 2012.
Surviving are two daughters, Ethel Mae (Roger) McDaniel, of Kalkaska, and Yvonne (William) Jackson, of St. Johns; two sons, Gilbert (Jennifer) Uithol, of Traverse City, and Terry Uithol, of St. Johns; seven grandchildren, Shawn (Becky) McDaniel, Kris (Paul) Flohr, Gilbert James (Karen) Uithol, Scott (Dawn) Uithol, Jason (Christina) Uithol, Edward (Jamie) Jackson and Ann (Jason) Abraham; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by former husband, Gilbert Uithol Jr.; granddaughter, Rebecca Uithol; brother, Robert (Corinne) Davis; and daughter-in-law, Nancy Uithol.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at 2 p.m., at Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City, with visitation from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Excelsior Township Cemetery.
