FRANKFORT — Karen Ann Nielsen Lupton, of Frankfort, passed away on the beautiful morning of Sept. 22, 2012, at POMH Long Term Care with loved ones by her side. She went to join her daughter, Dana; sister, Pam; and her parents, Einar and "Tooty".
She was born and raised in Frankfort, graduating in 1956 from Frankfort High School. She attended beauty school in Traverse City. After beauty school she returned to work at her parents business, the Towne & Beauty Shop .
After raising her three children she traveled to west California and was employed with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department for many years.
Upon retiring she returned home to Frankfort.
Karen had a full life. She enjoyed watching sports on TV and always knew who was playing, where and when, and had the scores written on a yellow tablet so she wouldn't forget. If it wasn't the sports channel, she was watching QVC, which she enjoyed very much and even had the purchases to prove it! It was not uncommon to stop and visit with Karen, then she would show you her latest treasures and send you home with something as well. She had a very giving spirit.
Karen also enjoyed playing gin rummy with her cousin, "Snookie," and was an avid pinochle player with past friend, Janice, and niece, Marianne.
She never would have made it this far in life without the love, support and care of her niece, Merry Leesa.
Karen loved cats. She had many, many different cats over the years and her latest cat, Carmela-Fiona, has gone to live with a local neighbor in the area. She was well aware the cat would be taken care of.
Karen was a great teller of "tall-tales" so you always went away with a chuckle in your heart and your brain, wondering if there was any truth to the story. Her memory lives on, from the little apartment on Main Street, and boy, is the Schwan's man going to miss her! That's what made Karen Karen, and we all loved her just the way she was.
She is survived by children, John "Kipp" Lupton and Jennifer (Jim) Wood; grandchildren, Levi Wood, Royce Flores and Mary Kate Flores, all of California; sister, Merry Kay Hollenbeck; brother-in-law, Larry Sommers; cat, Carmela-Fiona; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Dana Lupton Flores; and sister, Pamela Sommers.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with guest Pastor Dinah Haag from the First Congregational Church of Frankfort. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, and a luncheon will follow the service in the fellowship hall.
Contributions may be directed toward a hospice care of your choosing.
Arrangements are by Jowett Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Frankfort.
