TRAVERSE CITY — Howard Casper Melichar, 83, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Howard was born at home on 11th Street on Friday, March 29, 1929, the son of the late Casper and Naomi (Kratochvil) Melichar.
He grew up and attended school in town and became a member of the graduating class of 1947. Shortly after, Howard answered the call of duty enlisting with the United States Army proudly serving his country as a medic. On December 12, 1964, Howard entered into marriage with the former Shirley Jackman, enjoying 28 years together until her passing in 1992.
Howard enjoyed working the soil and spent time tending to his vegetable garden. He could often be found working one of the latest crossword puzzles or checking in with family on his answers. He will be remembered and missed.
Howard is survived by his son, Steve (Cindy) Melichar of Traverse City; one sister, Dorothy Alderton of Traverse City; daughter-in-law, Jan Melichar; grandchildren, Angie Caves, Nicole Melichar, and Michael Godfrey; as well as many other loving family members and friends.
Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; one son, Daniel Melichar; an infant brother, Donald; brother, Jackson Melichar; sister, Rose Mary Darrow; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Darrow and George Alderton; and his parents.
Per Howard’s wishes cremation will take place and no services will be held.
