---- — TRAVERSE CITY — Raymond “Ray” Greening, 90, died Saturday morning, Nov. 23, 2013 at Cherry Hill Haven in Traverse City.
He was born May 12, 1923 in Detroit to David Paul and Clara Pearl (nee Pelton) Greening. He was one of seven children and is survived by one sister Patricia Caputo of Grosse Pointe, Mich.
Ray was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, having served with the 55th Fighter Squadron from 1943 to 1945. On Christmas Eve 1946, he married Shirley Jean Dick. Together they raised seven children. He and his family resided in Walled Lake, Mich. on Wolverine Lake from 1946 to 1983, in the home he built.
He enjoyed ice fishing and sailing the catamaran and DN iceboats that he built. He was a finish carpenter by trade and assisted with many landmarks in the Detroit and suburban areas.
In 1979, he and Shirley bought property on the Muskegon River in Evart, Mich. and enjoyed many years vacationing there with family and friends where they enjoyed camping, swimming and kayaking. In 1983, after retirement, he and his wife moved to Traverse City to be close to children who had moved there. Ray later lived alone in Evart from 2006 to 2010 in his log cabin.
His survivors include six of his seven children all residing in Michigan, Lynne Ann Greening of Norton Shores, Sheryn Lee Groves of Wixom, Gayle Ellen Rossi (Rick) of Commerce Twp. and Karin Jean Burke (Glen), Raymond Craig, Jr., and Kevin Paul Greening (Christi), all of Traverse City. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.
Ray was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 49 years, Shirley in 1995, and daughter Sandy Rae Thompson in 2001, as well as three brothers, David, Wayne, Roy, and sisters Verna West and Audrey Greening.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City, with visitation one hour prior. Memorial contributions in Ray’s name may be directed to Hospice of Michigan.
