TRAVERSE CITY -- Chester E. Bishop, 85, of Traverse City, passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at his home.
Chester was born on March 11, 1924, to the late Chester and Avinell (Ryan) Bishop in Carland.
Chester answered the call of duty and served his country as a member of the United States Army with the 16th Infantry, serving in the European Theater during WWII.
Chester entered into marriage with the former Phyllis M. Coger on Nov. 12, 1949, in Michigan.
Chet was a member of the Traverse City Fellowship Church and made his living as a meat cutter. Chet worked for A&P Tea. Co. until June 1968, and Dingman's in Bellaire before retiring in 1988. Chet was also a member of the Amvets and the VFW Cherryland Post 2780. He enjoyed bowling and served as an officer for the Traverse City Bowling Association. Chet could often be found taking any opportunity to fish. He thoroughly enjoyed the time on the water with friends and family. Chet was quite the angler and will be deeply missed.
Chester is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Phyllis M. Bishop of Traverse City; his son, Brian (Nancy) Bishop of Grand Rapids; his four daughters, Lindsey (Robert) Geiger of Grawn, Teresa Pickard of Grawn, Robyn Bishop of Traverse City, Kelly (Phil) Bauman of Interlochen; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many other loving family members and friends.
Chester was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Dahrel, Paul, Loyal, Lonal and Keith Bishop; one sister, Roberta Powers.
Visitation for friends and family will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. this evening, Nov. 9, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the funeral home, with Rev. Jon DeBruyn officiating.
