LAS VEGAS -- Alvin "Al" J. Zimmerman, 76, of Las Vegas, passed away Nov. 1, 2009. He was born May 1, 1933, in Traverse City, and was a 42-year resident of Nevada.
He graduated from St. Francis High School, Northwestern Michigan College and Michigan State University.
He dedicated his life to law enforcement as a probation and parole officer for the state of Michigan, a police officer for East Lansing and Oakland, Calif., and as a special agent with the FBI (field offices, Houston, New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La., and Las Vegas) from 1961 until he retired in Las Vegas in 1986.
A gun collector and skilled marksman, Al was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing and anything outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his father, I. Zimmerman; and brother, Richard Zimmerman.
Al is survived by his mother, Evangeline Kriets Zimmerman of Traverse City; ex-wife, Violet Zimmerman of Bellaire; sons, James (Linda) of Prescott, Ariz., Irvin (Birgit) of Reno, Nev., and Eric (Natalie) of Las Vegas; daughters, Teresa Ryan (Martin) of Sutter Creek, Calif., and Van Marie of Reno, Nev.; grandchildren, Jennifer, Emma, Zachary and Sydney; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Violet; and longtime friend, Sue Verchick.
Services will be private.
