George J. 'Rocky' Vohwinkle

LAKE ANN -- George J. Vohwinkle, 83, of Lake Ann, died Wednesday, Nov. 04, 2009, at Tendercare Health Center of Leelanau in Suttons Bay.

George was born on Wednesday, June 9, 1926, to the late George and Florence (Hodgkinson) Vohwinkle in Flint. He married the former Reta Mae Donaghy on Saturday, Jan. 25, 1947, in Davison.

A veteran of World War II, George served our country as a member of the U.S. Army.

Living in the Saginaw area for many years, George was employed as a Customer Engineer for IBM. He was active in the church and community there.

After he and Reta moved to Lake Ann, they were active at Lake Ann United Methodist Church, where they were members. George taught Sunday School and Bible School there as well as singing in the choir, which he truly enjoyed.

He loved working with his hands, reading, music and fishing.

George is survived by his children, Kim (Rob) Smith of Cedar, Joseph (Lana) Vohwinkle of Hale and Craig (Geri) Vohwinkle of Lake Ann; his grandchildren, Jace, Jolanda and Heidi Vohwinkle, Kaischa Smith, Jared (Megan) Smith, Heather (Joe) Mesey and Wilma Walker; great-grandchildren, Talan Vohwinkle, Joseph, Brentley, Kathy Sue and Preston Mesey, and Kip and Hope Henderson. George is also survived by his siblings, Robert (Cleo) Vohwinkle, Gloria (Ken) Watters and Ralph (Nancy) Vohwinkle.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Reta.

Visitation will take place at The Christian Education Building of Lake Ann United Methodist Church (old building) from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. Funeral services will then begin at 11:30 a.m., with Pastor Carl Greene officiating. Burial will be in Greenbriar Cemetery.

The family has asked that memorial contributions be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or Lake Ann United Methodist Church.
