TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City's Sean Murphy earned the game's No. 1 star Friday night.
For good reason.
Murphy scored on a power play in the third period Friday night as the North Stars beat Michigan 5-3 in a North American Hockey League game at Centre ICE.
Murphy's second goal of the night snapped a 3-3 tie. J.D. Cotroneo drew the assist.
Jared VanWormer added an empty-net goal with 51 seconds left to ice it.
The Stars improved to 20-15-5. They are in third place, eight points ahead of Michigan in the North Division.
Connor Durgan and VanWormer netted first period goals as the two teams skated to a 2-2 tie. Jake Peacock assisted on Durgan's goal, Mitchell Snider and Chris Waterstreet assisted on VanWormer's.
Murphy put the Stars ahead in the second period, scoring off an assist from Nathan Harris, but Michigan tied it up before the period ended.
Zach Nagelvoort stopped 21 shots in goal for the Stars.
