North Stars win season opener

Traverse City tops Texas 4-1 in Showcase

The Traverse City North Stars gave Chad Fournier a win in his head coaching debut Wednesday night with a 4-1 triumph over Texas in the opening round of the NAHL Showcase Tournament.

Cadillac’s Will Badner scored a power play goal in the first period, off an assist from Chris Leibinger, and the North Stars never looked back.

Mitchell Snider scored off an Eric Rivard assist in the second period. Leibinger and Kyle Loridon closed it out with third period scores.

Kyle Laslo stopped 28 of 29 shots on goal for the North Stars, who play Odessa this afternoon.

Snider and Ryan Nick drew assists on Leibinger’s goal. Alex Shields and Jon Farkas had assists on Loridon’s tally.

Drew Allen scored in the second period for Texas, slicing Traverse City’s lead to 2-1 at the time.

Traverse City’s penalty kill stopped all seven Tornado power plays.
