Stars fall short in weekend finale

MAHONING VALLEY -- After dropping a 6-5 overtime loss to Traverse City on Saturday, Mahoning Valley made up for it Sunday with a 5-1 matinee win.

The Phantoms (28-10-4) moved four points in front of the North Stars (25-11-5) in the North Division after taking two of three games in the weekend series.

In Sunday's game, Traverse City trailed 4-0 after two periods when Kyle Jean scored 56 seconds into the third period. Tyler Stephens and Eric McLintock assisted the goal.

Brandon Stephenson was in net for the Stars and suffered the loss with 38 saves.

Nick Kenney had a hat-trick for Mahoning Valley.

In Saturday's game, Traverse City earned a 6-5 overtime win off a Phil Wendecker goal in the extra session.

David Johnstone, Garrett Thompson, Josh Miller, Dean Pawlaczyk and Travis White also had goals for Traverse City.

Stephenson made 39 saves to get the win in goal.
