TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City North Stars flipped the script on Mahoning Valley.
A day after the Phantoms erased a 3-1 Stars lead with a big third-period burst, TC turned around Sunday afternoon and racked up a trio of third-period goals for a 4-2 win over the division leaders.
Mahoning led 2-0 early in the second period, but was snuffed out for the rest of the game by C.J. Motte, who ended with 27 saves.
David Johnstone put the Stars on the board 6:24 into the second off Kyle Bonis and Marc Thompson assists. Josh Miller knotted the game up 25 seconds into the third as the same pair assisted.
Kyle Jean then put TC on top and gave it insurance. Jean struck off an Eric McLintock assist 7:37 into the third for Traverse City's first lead of the game and then iced the game with an empty-netter with 1:03 to go.
Traverse City (18-7-5) took two of three from the Phantoms (28-8-3) in a big three-game weekend series.
"It was kind of disappointing dropping the one Saturday after that win on Friday, but we rebounded well and played our best hockey of the weekend," Stars coach Anthony Palumbo said.
Mahoning's Trevor Shively drew a fighting instigator penalty with 1:02 left for a fight with Bonis on the face-off after Jean's empty-netter. Both were assessed game misconducts and will have to sit out a game, as will Phantoms defenseman Carl Neilsen, who collected 34 penalty minutes in a fight with Mike Schenfeld in which Neilsen was given both a game misconduct and a match penalty.
The Stars travel to Alpena on Thursday and host Marquette on Friday and Saturday.
