Author hopes 'Dreams' inspires others

GRAND RAPIDS — A mayonnaise sandwich, split three ways. Some days, that's all David Burch and his siblings would be given to eat. He said their childhood was one of poverty, violence, abuse and unbearable tragedy.

At one point, Burch said, he just wanted to give up.

In "Pocket Full of Dreams," Burch shares his story. A 1979 graduate of East Jordan High School, he hopes that others — especially young adults who struggle with confidence or feelings of inadequacy — will read it and be inspired to take charge and make changes in their lives.

"I hope people will understand that attitude is huge," Burch said. "Life is 10 percent what happens to you — and 90 percent how you react."

Burch, who now works in finance in Grand Rapids, will be at Horizon Books stores to sign books at the following times and locations: Friday, Dec. 7, 1 to 5 p.m., 115 S. Mitchell St., Cadillac; Saturday, Dec. 8, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 319 E. Mitchell St., Petoskey; Saturday, Dec. 8, 4 to 6 p.m., 243 E. Front St., Traverse City.

A portion of the proceeds from book sales will benefit several nonprofit organizations including the East Jordan Rotary Club's S.T.R.I.V.E. Program for at-risk high school students.
