Path to publication
TRAVERSE CITY — Heather Shumaker of Traverse City will present a workshop titled, "Navigating the Path to Publication," on behalf of Michigan Writers on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
Shumaker will offer tips on finding a literary agent, drafting a query letter and writing a book proposal. She'll also present an overview of the steps involved in traditional publishing, for fiction as well as nonfiction writers.
The author of "It's OK Not to Share ... And Other Renegade Rules for Raising Competent and Compassionate Kids," Shumaker is a speaker, journalist and blogger whose work has appeared in the Huffington Post, Parenting, Pregnancy, Organic Gardening and other media.
The program runs from 7-9 p.m. in Room 213 of the Northwestern Michigan College University Center on Cass Road. Attendance is free for Michigan Writers members and $10 for nonmembers. Nonmembers may join on site for $40, cash or check, and the fee will be waived.
'Just us here'
TRAVERSE CITY — Now that winter is here, Brilliant Books is doubling the usual 10 percent discount for downtown employees' first purchase of the new year.
"It's just us up here now," said Brilliant Books' owner Peter Makin, referring to the fact that visitors and tourists have largely gone, "so we thought it would be nice to do something for the folks who stick around all year."
To participate, downtown workers can register their Downtown Employee Discount Card at Brilliant Books any time this month.
