Northern Notes: Senior gives back to school

By STEPHANIE BEACH
Local columnist

As her senior exit project, Emma Cook of Cedar, a June graduate of Glen Lake High School, took on the daunting task of raising $4,000 to purchase a new upright piano for Glen Lake's music department. She achieved her goal with the generous support of the community and would like to thank everyone who helped make the Glen Lake Schools "88 Keys Club" project a success.

Emma sends her thanks to Seamus Shinners, Patrick Niemisto, Glen Lake's Mighty Fine Arts group, the Homestead, Kurtz Music, Benchwarmers, all those who attended the Michael Smith concert, and the staff at Glen Lake Community Schools who were so generous in their support.

Emma also would like to thank the following businesses and families who became "88 Keys Club" members; Laker Shakes, the Leelanau Enterprise, Frank J. Flees & Sons Logging, Honor State Bank, the Hilliard family, Flowers Painting, Bill Lee, DDS, Bruce Lee, DDS, the Springsteen family, the Woessner family, John DeKorne, the Cottage Book Shop, Jeff and Lisa LaCross, Ron Lints, DDS, the Blissfest Music Organization, John Evans, the Glen Lake PTO, Tom and Joan Wigton, Bob and Lynn Johnson, Burritt's Fresh Markets, Glen and Judy LaCross, Paul Maurer Construction, Tom and JoAnn Bender, Drs. Northway and Hall Orthodontics, the Rising Star Wellness Center, Gary Cook and Sue Wood, Jill Webb, the Glen Arbor Art Association, Web and Lois Cook, David and Sharon Hendricks, Ben and Ananda Bricker, Jandy Sprouse and family, and Elizabeth Blondia.

"This project was only a success because of your support," Emma wrote. "Thanks also to all those whom I have inevitably forgotten, and know that without the help of every last person I would have lost my way numerous times."

Maryann Kot of Rapids City was enjoying a bike ride along the TART Trail recently when she took a header.

Maryann was bleeding quite badly from a gash by her eye. A lady and young boy came to her aid and offered her their first-aid kit. After accepting their kind offer, Maryann wrote that she was ashamed of herself for not getting their names and addresses.

"I am hoping they read (this) and know how much I appreciated their assistance," she wrote.

Maryann closed by saying that one good turn deserves another and wants to remind other bicyclists to wear helmets.

"I was lucky, my injury will heal, and someone else might not be as fortunate as I was to have two very nice people come to my aid."
