Northern Notes: School supplies needed

BY STEPHANIE BEACH
Local columnist

Every year many children start school without what they need for a successful learning experience. Cherry Stop of Traverse City and Charter Media are teaming up to change that by sponsoring "Operation School Supplies."

"We want to give every child a fighting chance to succeed in school and by collecting school supplies here in our store, we are happy to contribute to our own community and help our kids have what they need to get off to a good start," said Jamie Roster, owner of Cherry Stop.

School supplies will be collected at Cherry Stop, 211 E. Front St., through Sept. 5 and will be distributed to local school children in need.

Dale Schultz, of Empire, wrote with kudos to everyone who helped him provide baseball equipment to his nephew, Sergeant Nathan Hadd, and other members of the 3rd Division Infantry serving in Iraq.

This is Nathan's second deployment and Dale and Nathan's mom, Mary Machin of Cedar, usually send him a care package with goodies from home. When Nathan came home on leave, Dale asked what he could send next and Nathan replied "a couple of baseball gloves would be nice because there isn't any baseball equipment available to play with." Dale said he would see what he could do and placed an ad requesting donations.

"I've received 43 baseball gloves, 12 bats, 89 baseballs and softballs, catchers' gear, storage bags and other miscellaneous gear," Dale wrote. " I also received $250 in cash donations that I used to purchase additional gear. I would like to thank Rachel with TV 7&4, Bo Leiteritz and dad, Interlochen Eagles 3503, Dean and Lisa Schultz, Bud in Manton, Mike Owen and the guys at Bill Marsh, Jack Pickard of the Michigan VFW, Photos by Carl, Ron, Chris and Katie, Don Schultz, Steve and Sally, John and Sandy at Lake Ann Grocery, Bud Harrison, and everyone else who I haven't mentioned for contributing."

Drum roll, please! During the past 12 months, the six libraries that make up the Traverse Area District Library (Woodmere Avenue, East Bay Branch, Kingsley Branch, Interlochen Public Library, Peninsula Community Library and Fife Lake Public Library) have loaned 1,005,999 items district-wide.

This is the first 12-month period that the district has exceeded a million items and that's quite a milestone. For comparison, 10 years ago, district-wide circulation was about 590,000 items.

Items for this column may be sent to Northern Notes, Record-Eagle, P.O. Box 632, Traverse City, MI 49685-0632; e-mail sbeach@record-eagle.com.
