Northern Notes: Vince wants Molly to call him

Vince Mack of Traverse City would like Molly from Lake Leelanau to contact him.

On Feb. 8, Mack was skiing on the TART trail between Traverse City and Suttons Bay. At some point along the trail, Mack's new phone fell out of his coat pocket. After rewalking his route several times, he decided it was gone for good.

"To my surprise, my wife received a call on Feb. 10 from Molly in Lake Leelanau saying she had found my phone," Mack wrote. "She returned it to my wife and it all works great. I would like her to contact me so I can properly reward her for returning my phone. It's so refreshing to know that there are still trustworthy people out there. Thanks Molly!"

Donna Featherstone's knight in shining armor didn't arrive on a white horse, but in a blue pickup truck sporting a door of a different color.

Featherstone, who lives at 10th and Union in Traverse City, arrived home on New Year's Eve to find what she called the "biggest plow-in that she's ever seen" in the 10 years she's lived in Traverse City. Featherstone had to make a trip to Clio in southern Michigan and was thinking about the work she would face when she got back from her long drive as she prepared a thermos for the trip. That's when her "phantom" snowplow knight arrived and spent about 15 minutes plowing her out.

"His wonderful gift sustained me all the way," Featherstone said. "I'd love to know who he is. I'll even bake him some cookies!"

Kettunen 4-H Conference Center's 27th Breakfast with Santa was attended by 895 children and parents who enjoyed a hot meal, a visit with Santa Claus, crafts and entertainment.

The event's success involved more than 125 teen and adult volunteers representing 4-H clubs, National Honor Society chapters from area schools, musicians, Osceola County businesses and others.

"Teens participated from Evart, Manton and Pine River high schools, as well as teens and adults from Bits 'n' Bridle, Country 4-Hers and the Pegasus 4-H clubs of Osceola County. Music was provided by folk musicians, Mulligan Stew," wrote Kama Ross, Kettunen Center's volunteer coordinator for the event. "The breakfast ... provides an opportunity for local families to enjoy an inexpensive, fun-filled outing together ... during the holiday season and it was great to see so many local teens and adults wanting to make the holidays happier for others in their community.
