TRAVERSE CITY — Deputies continue investigating a Labor Day weekend crash that left an Elk Rapids man dead.

Grand Traverse County sheriff’s deputies continue piecing together the details to determine what led to the multi-vehicle crash that killed Joseph Hejna, 26, from Elk Rapids.

Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Barsheff said Hejna drove a Honda Fit northbound on US-31 near Five Mile Road east of Traverse City Saturday at about 10:20 a.m. It appears the vehicle crossed the centerline and hit a southbound truck, he said.

Emergency responders pronounced Hejna dead at the scene, according to a sheriff’s department Facebook post.

Barsheff said deputies continue searching for the driver of a red-colored vehicle they believe was nearby when the crash occurred and who could help them better understand what happened.

Anyone with information on the crash should call sheriff’s department officials at 231-922-4550.
