Northern Notes: Vets thank residents for support

Albert Ockert, president of the Northwest Michigan Chapter of the Korean War Veterans of Traverse City, wrote on behalf of the chapter to thank the people of the Grand Traverse area for their generous support of the chapter’s annual Rose of Sharon fund-raising sale. The Rose of Sharon is South Korea’s national flower.

Karlee Hintsala, a 2013 Kingsley High School graduate, recently leveraged more than $2,500 in donations for community organizations as part of a school project.

When she visited The Rock of Kingsley Youth Center, Karlee saw first-hand the positive opportunity it offers young people in Kingsley. This inspired her to begin a coin drive which snowballed and resulted in a grant award to The Rock from the Kingsley Community Fund of the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation. This in turn inspired a gift from the DTE Foundation to the Kingsley Community Fund, which supports youth programs in Kingsley.

“The efforts of Karlee to initiate giving to benefit her small community are impressive and inspiring,” said Alison Metiva, Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation director of communications.

This summer, Benzie Area Christian Neighbors has enjoyed the volunteer services of three young summer vacationers earning community service hours to meet graduation or honor society participation requirements.

The volunteers are Seth Harrington of Bear Lake High School, Jackson Johns of Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., and Daniel Congbalay of Glen Brook North High School in Northbrook, Ill. Seth hopes to become a physician, Daniel is planning a career in international business, and Jackson hopes to earn a degree in economics from Dartmouth.

The Young Americans recently announced that the goal of their new “Turn Up the Music” campaign is to raise $1 million to help support music programs in public and private schools in the United States.
