---- — TRAVERSE CITY — New York Times bestselling authors, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and a popular poet are among the guests on this year’s National Writers Series.
The year-round “book festival,” founded by locals Doug and Anne Stanton and Grant Parsons, was announced today. It will bring some of the country’s top writers to downtown Traverse City for candid talks with guest hosts.
Series director Jill Tewsley said likely standouts include poet Nikki Giovanni, a Grammy nominee and Oprah Living Legend, and novelist Sara Paretsky, who is credited with transforming the mystery genre with “that strong-willed woman who is a central character.” Also among Tewsley’s top picks: Pulitzer prize winning journalist David Finkel, author of a book about post-traumatic stress disorder.
“It’s a very moving and hard-to-read book but he has some incredibly important things to say,” Tewsley said. “It might be the sleeper.”
Other series guests are novelists Benjamin Percy and Jamie Ford and literary journalist Michael Paterniti. They’ll be joined by hosts Doug Stanton, Jeremiah Chamberlin, Rich Fahle, Leigh Haber and Nancy Baker.
Tickets for the events, Sept. 5-Nov. 5, go on sale to Friends of the National Writers Series on Tuesday at noon and to the general public Aug. 27. They’re available at the City Opera House box office, online at cityoperahouse.org and by phone at 941-8082.
