Services planned for man who died after fall from tree stand

SUTTONS BAY — A Maple City man died after falling from a tree stand in Leelanau County’s Kasson Township.

Authorities said Donald Joseph Peplinski, 59, was hunting off Coleman Road the evening of Oct. 26 when he apparently fell from his tree stand.

Emergency workers tried to treat Peplinski and transported him to Munson Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A master mechanic and fabricator, the former U.S. Marine was known for the many military vehicles he restored.

He retired from CenturyTel in 2009 after 30 years as a utility lineman and service technician.

Family members described Peplinski as a natural prankster who always looked for an opportunity to share a smile and find a way to create a laugh.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Debra Peplinski, two sons, and one grandchild.

Visitation will take place Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Peplinski’s life will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Bay Pointe Community Church, 6880 Secor, Traverse City.

A complete obituary can be found in Tuesday’s Record-Eagle.

Leelanau County sheriff’s officials said Peplinski’s death is considered an accident, but the incident remains under investigation.
