State Trails Summit slated for Acme on Tuesday

TRAVERSE CITY — About 80 trails advocates from across Michigan are expected to turn out for a state summit in Acme to map ways to connect Michigan’s recreational trails systems over the next five years and bolster its reputation as the “Trails State.”

Michigan has more than 12,000 miles of recreational trails, including 2,626 miles of rail trails.

Julie Clark, TART’s executive director, will kick off the day-long summit on Tuesday. She also will help DNR policy coordinator Donna Stine present an overview of the state’s new comprehensive trail plans. Northern Lower Michigan’s trail networks also will be presented as model, said Clark, who will speak about the importance of collaborative vision for trail communities.

The summit is part of a larger, week-long Michigan Recreation & Parks Association conference and trade show to be held from today to Friday at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. It will focus on the role parks, trails and natural resources play in community life, Clark said.

MRPA expects about 450 people from several state agencies, recreational trail groups and users to attend, as well as city and township governments throughout the state where trails exist or are planned.

The summit is hosted by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will include breakout sessions on a variety of topics: motorized and non-motorized summer and winter trails, water trails, conflict resolution, marketing, programming, maintenance and funding.

The cost of the day-long summit is $50 per person. Participants can register online at: http://www.mrpaonline.org/
