To Berdyll Hanrath, who signed up for World War II while still in the eighth grade; he never went back to school but got his high school diploma anyway. Hanrath, now 87, joined the 39 graduates of Frankfort High School last Sunday to accept his diploma. Hanrath left the eighth grade in 1942 and was part of the second wave at Normandy with the 3rd Armored Division. He suffered a severe concussion when a grenade landed in the back of his half track. He met Frankfort high school librarian Janet Pomerleau when he took his Model A to the school prom. She asked if he’d be interested in getting a diploma under a state law that offers “life credits” and he said he would.

n To Dave Jodway of Sutons Bay who recently celebrated 50 years with Oleson’s Food Stores. The 68-year-old Jodway started at the store as a bagger at age 18. He has worked with four generations of the Oleson family as a bagger, cashier, stocker and accountant.

n To Northwestern Michigan College and the Traverse City Rotary Clubs for hosting the annual Kids Free Fishing Day at NMC’s Great Lakes Campus June 15. Kids are asked to bring their own gear, but rods, reels and bait will be provided for those who need them. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

n To NMC and the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments for the “Just in Time” program, which aims to offer high-intensity, seven-week technical education degrees. The matches area employers’ immediate needs with unemployed or underemployed workers.

n To Jered Ottenwess and Tim Arends who were hired as Traverse City City Manager and Executive Director of Traverse City Light & Power, respectively. Ottenwess, who will make $100,000 a year is the former city manager of Ishpeming. Arends is the former controller at Light & Power. He will make $108,000 per years plus a $350 monthly car allowance.
