Two accused of taking turns driving while drunk

TRAVERSE CITY — Police arrested two Frankfort women accused of taking turns behind the wheel of a car while drunk.

One woman crashed a Kia Optima into a light pole while driving eastbound near the intersection of Barlow Street and Boyd Avenue around 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 13, Traverse City police Capt. Mike Ayling said.

The driver then switched seats with a female passenger. The new driver began driving the Kia away, even though the car had two flat tires after the crash.

A neighbor saw the accident and called 911. Police found the Kia and stopped the car. The woman who was driving told police she was not behind the wheel during the accident. The original driver, by this time a passenger, tried to walk away from the Kia before officers stopped her.

Both women appeared "highly intoxicated," Ayling said.

Both women were arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. Police did not immediately release their names or ages.
