Northern Notes: Benefit helps children with hair loss

In May, members of the Grand Traverse Academy’s Key Club sponsored a successful benefit for Children with Hair Loss, a nonprofit organization that makes hair replacements for children suffering from medically-related hair loss.

The school’s multi-purpose room was transformed into a hair salon where hair stylists Lori Peck and Laura Riebschleger, both Grand Traverse Academy parents, and Jennifer Howard and Laura Jewell from Sharkey’s Cuts for Kids did hair trimming. Thanks to the generosity of students, their family members and others in the community more than 130 eight-inch locks of hair were collected.

That evening, Key Club members sponsored a benefit dance with the admission fee also donated to Children with Hair Loss.

“We are so pleased with the outcome of this event,” said Abbi Gee, Key Club advisor. “The results are a direct reflection of the kind of families whose children attend Grand Traverse Academy. People of all ages came to kindly donate their hair — even a woman from out of town who was here for a weekend Mother’s Day trip! Members of the club extend their heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity they had to serve others and for the donations that will change the lives of many children.”

The Elk Rapids Schools’ AP Biology students did more than “speak for the trees” in May, they made the Lorax proud by planting more than 700 trees.

The students planted the trees on 40 acres of forest off Moore Road owned by Elk Rapids Schools in the first phase of a project the includes planting another 5,000 trees in October. Students worked in conjunction with Glen Beyers, retired DNR Forester, and with the support of Christine Crissman, Grand Traverse Conservation District’s director of conservation and interim director of education, who provided the trees at cost to Elk Rapids Schools.
